Re: Defoe retires.
I was collecting autographs with my young son after one game and he was surrounded by loads of youngsters all eager to get him to sign stuff. He was wearing a rather expensive looking light tan/brown suit and when he emerged from the hysterical mob of young hammers his suit was a rather dashing light tan/brown with red, blue, black & green felt tip pen flecks πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚βš’βš’

Re: Defoe retires.
He was a lethal finisher, one of the best of his generation, I don't think his career matched his ability as a player, should have had a lot more England caps to his name.

A club legend who refers to Spurs as "US"

The fucking worm.

Re: Defoe retires.
He's been very contrite about the move, so I'm over that. We all make mistakes so for him to own up to that is good enough for me. Compare to FLJ....

Agree with others that it always surprised me that he didn't get bought by one of the bigger Clubs. He guaranteed goals and was excellent at link-up. I think he'd be higher-rated now because of how stats-driven we are. Underused by England too, because of WAZZA.

Hated him at the time.

As time has gone on, realised he actually seems like a decent guy and was terribly advised during his West Ham departure - especially now you hear speak about it now.

In terms of ability, think he was wasted at Spurs. I'm sure he'll look back fondly on his career but never understand why none of the big clubs signed him.

Held that grudge for a few years but over time he's forgiven.

How we could use him in his prime now.

Re: Defoe retires.
Seem to recall if he had been sent off for a 4th time he would have been banned for 12 matches so that obviously sped up the transfer

Re: Defoe retires.
Still remember that volley he scored away to Charlton around 2000, might have been his first West Ham goal, time flies.

Re: Defoe retires.
He was sent off 3 times in his last 14 games for us having never been sent off previously
One was Gillingham away which I dont recall
Another was Walsall where I think someone ran into him and it was a ludicrous decision.
The other was a 3-0 up lose 4-3 game v WBA where he slid in to block a clearance and caught the defender .... not usually a red in those day
He scored 11 goals in those 14 games.

Badly advised as a young kid, fantastic striker, he doesn't get under my skin as much as some others have in the past

Great for us at times, great bloke, great goal scorer, good luck to him.

Re: Defoe retires.
Mind is a bit hazy but lots of ups and downs with us if I recall:

Brilliant as a kid and formed good partnership with Di Canio and scored big goals - remember goals against Man Utd both home and away.

His transfer request was very Paul Ince but has since tried to defend it.

Local lad from Poplar (i think) and family were West Ham fans. Wasn’t his mum his agent / manager and apparently tough when negotiating with Harry.

Was there a game where he got himself deliberately sent off when we were in the championship? West Brom? Felt at time a way
of forcing a move .

His move to Tottenham with Zamora coming to us was great for all parties.

Not sure if England stats but never felt he played as much as he should have? A classic goal scorer. What we would do to have him back as a youngster now.

Re: Defoe retires.
Probably not how he'd want to be remembered, but I'll remember him as a rat faced weasel cunt that kicked the West Ham supporters in the nuts while they were on the floor.

Very good goal scorer though.

Re: Defoe retires.
Had a brilliant career, a proper natural goalscorer. Fell short of dining at the top table, i.e Owen, Fowler, Lineker etc, but the boy did good.

Met his cousin at The Firestation pub in Waterloo once. Very cute . Married to Millwall though .

Biggest fuck up Eriksson made not taking him in 2006 to the WC and taking Walcott instead. Especially after Owen’s injury . Recon we would have won it with him

Re: Defoe retires.
He signed for Sunderland 6 weeks ago.

What was the fucking point of that then?

Cunt.

Sven Roeder 2:13 Thu Mar 24
Re: Defoe retires.
He was 26 when he left Tottenham for Portsmouth
Went back to Tottenham and left for Toronto when he was early 30's

We should have bought him in either of those moves or before he went to Sunderland.
Missed opportunities when you think of some of the drips we bought as 'strikers' instead

I have nothing but respect for JD, and I'm too old to hold grudges over what a kid did almost two decades ago.

He showed the man he was when he was when he was there for young Bradley Lowery and the family. And unlike other professionals who do things for the camera, his bond with that kid was genuine.

Enjoy retirement, Jermaine. πŸ‘βš’
